The first mention we find in the Novgorod Chronicle, dated to around 1387. The first written document is a charter of donation of 30 March 1392. City Name was taken from Roman I Musat, considered the founder of the city. When I founded the Roman and Hebrew city were among the first inhabitants. Roman I freed the Hebrew military service in exchange for a tax. Largely destroyed in 1467 during his campaign Matthias Corvinus in Moldova, has been restored by Stephen the Great.
Until the establishment of the communist regime in Romania (1946-1949) was Roman county. County was abolished with the administrative reform of September 6, 1950, when the old counties were replaced by regions after the Soviet model. Administrative reform of Nicolae Ceausescu in 1968 has re-established Roman district, territory of the former county being included in the current predominantly Neamt County. Since 1989 Romania has not been reinstated County although a general request to that effect.
